Pune Weather: Orange Alert Issued as Heavy Rain Elevates Dam Water Levels
Over the past 24 hours, Pune and its neighboring areas have witnessed heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, resulting in a rapid surge in dam water levels. As of 8:30 am on Wednesday, Shivajinagar reported a rainfall of 39.9 mm. In response to the prevailing weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, urging people to be prepared, particularly in the hilly regions of the district. Currently, the monsoon trough stretches across Bikaner and Sikar in Rajasthan, Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Digha in West Bengal.
This meteorological phenomenon has caused Maharashtra to experience a renewed spell of heavy rainfall. Notably, the automatic weather station at Mahabaleshwar recorded a significant downpour of 152 mm, while Matheran received 124 mm of rainfall. Lohegaon’s weather station registered 40.8 mm of rainfall. The Khadakwasla dam in Pune is presently 80 percent full, necessitating the opening of dam gates to release excess water.In Kolhapur district, all four dams are operating at over 60 percent capacity. Consequently, dams like Radhanagari and Tulsi have commenced water discharge. As a result, the water levels in the Panchganga and Warna rivers have risen, leading to an increase in the water levels at the bridges connecting the city.
