Heavy Rains Cause Deadly Flooding in Nagpur; Two Bodies Recovered
Tragedy struck Nagpur on Saturday as heavy rains led to severe flooding, resulting in the loss of three lives. While two bodies have been recovered, the search continues for an 11-year-old boy who remains missing.
Preliminary reports from the Talathi of Bharatwada, Punapur, and Somalwada shed light on the devastating impact of the floodwaters. Bhojraj Dulichand Patel, a 52-year-old resident of Shyamnagar, Punapur, tragically fell into a nullah and was swept away. His body was discovered on Sunday and has been transferred to Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH).
Another victim, 85-year-old Sudha Vishweshwarrao Verulkar, was swept away while inspecting the water flow of a nullah between Beltarodi and Besa. Her body was found in the Shyam Nagar nullah. According to the district administration, she had been battling mental illness.
The search is still on for 11-year-old Shravan Vijay Tulsikar from Mohan Nagar in Bharatwada. He was playing near a nullah when he was swept away, and efforts are ongoing to locate him.
In response to the tragic events, East Nagpur MLA Krishna Khopde visited the affected areas and met with the families of Patle and Tulsikar. He offered his condolences and discussed the incidents with the families. Khopde also spoke with the District Collector, who assured support during this difficult time. Several BJP workers, including Deepak Vadibhasme, Manisha Atkare, Chakradhar Atkare, Sanjay Mankar, Devendra Vaidya, Raju Divte, Sunil Suryavanshi, Harshal Kale, Subodh Manvatkar, and Bhivagde, joined Khopde in his visit, showing solidarity with the affected families.
Considering the ongoing heavy rains and an Orange Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department, District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar has declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, and anganwadis on Monday. The decision aims to prioritize the safety of students as the heavy rains may disrupt traffic and pose potential risks. Individual institutions will decide whether their staff will also have the day off, following the guidelines outlined in Section 25 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
