In a significant crackdown on counterfeit currency, the Pune city police have seized 2,070 fake ₹500 notes, valued at approximately ₹10.35 lakh. This operation is part of an investigation into a counterfeit currency racket that was exposed in October 2024. Police have arrested five individuals in connection with this case: Nilesh Virkar (33), Saifan Patel (26), Afzal Shah (19), Shahid Qureshi (25), and Shahfahad Ansari (22).The investigation commenced on October 8, 2024, when Nilesh Virkar was caught near the Padmavati bus stop with 250 fake notes in his possession.
His subsequent interrogation uncovered links to other individuals involved in the distribution of counterfeit currency, prompting further arrests. Notably, Shahfahad Ansari, identified as the key supplier in the operation, was re-arrested last week, which led to the discovery of additional fake notes in Palghar.Authorities suspect that the counterfeit currency was produced in Delhi and Ghaziabad.
Currently, all arrested individuals are in judicial custody, while the seized notes have been forwarded to the Nashik currency press for verification.Senior Inspector Chhagan Kapase from the Sahkarnagar police station stated that efforts are underway to trace the manufacturers of the fake currency. A police team has already been dispatched to Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, to investigate further and identify the sources behind this illicit operation.
This crackdown on counterfeit currency not only aims to uphold the integrity of the financial system but also serves as a warning against the illegal circulation of fake notes within the region.
