Nagpur to Host Google’s AI Center of Excellence

The city of Nagpur is set to enhance its reputation as a hub for technological innovation with the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center of Excellence (CoE) by Google. Recently, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Google in Mumbai, marking a significant milestone for the region.
Strengthening Educational Landscape
With the addition of Google’s AI CoE, alongside existing institutions like IIIT, IIM, VNIT, AIIMS, and MNLU, Nagpur is solidifying its status as a center for education, research, and innovation. In a post shared on X, Fadnavis stated, “We discussed the progress of Google AI MoU signed with the government of Maharashtra and decided to set a date for this year for the AI Center of Excellence (CoE) to be established in Nagpur.”
Focus on Real-World AI Solutions
Confirming the development to Times of India, Fadnavis expressed optimism that the center will concentrate on fostering AI-driven solutions for real-world challenges, promoting technological advancements, and creating opportunities for the youth in Maharashtra. The MoU was formalized after a high-level meeting in the state capital with Oliver Parker, Google’s Vice President of Global Generative AI GTM, and senior officials from the tech company.
Commitment to Deep Tech and Collaboration
Fadnavis mentioned in his tweet, “Google shared updates of various projects undertaken. They also reassured their commitment towards deep tech and investments in the AI sector across India, with a special focus on Maharashtra.” The discussions included exploring ways to enhance collaboration with the state government.
Vision for AI and Innovation
At a private event, Fadnavis elaborated on the initiative, stating, “The Center of Excellence at IIIT in Nagpur will soon become a significant hub for AI, and an Innovation City is being developed in the state to drive research in various fields.” He highlighted the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence on the tech sector, reiterating that the state government recognizes its potential through this MoU with Google.Fadnavis envisions the center becoming a leading institution in the country in the coming years, emphasizing the need for research amidst rapid advancements in various sectors. He added, “An Innovation City is being established in the state to meet this need.”
