Nagpur Traffic Police Unveils ‘Footpath Freedom’ Campaign to Address Illegal Parking and Encroachments

In a bid to tackle the rising issues of illegal parking and unauthorized hawker encroachments, the Nagpur Traffic Police have launched a special campaign titled “Footpath Freedom.” This initiative aims to address the growing concerns regarding pedestrian safety and traffic flow disruptions caused by vehicles parked on public footpaths and hawker setups. The campaign was initiated in response to increasing complaints from citizens about vehicles obstructing pedestrian pathways, forcing pedestrians to navigate busy roads, which significantly heightens the risk of accidents.
Moreover, hawkers often establish temporary stalls on footpaths, with customers parking their vehicles nearby, further complicating pedestrian movement. To combat these violations effectively, the traffic police are implementing strict measures under applicable laws. Vehicles parked illegally on footpaths are subject to towing based on Sections 122, 127, and 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act. Additionally, unauthorized hawker setups are being dismantled according to Sections 102 and 117 of the Maharashtra Police Act. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will assist in this enforcement by towing vehicles to ensure that footpaths remain unobstructed for pedestrians.
Archit Chandak, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), has urged citizens to park only in designated areas and has advised hawkers against setting up stalls that impede footpaths or roadside access. He also encouraged hawkers to inform their customers about proper parking etiquette. The “Footpath Freedom” campaign seeks to enhance pedestrian safety and promote smoother traffic movement throughout the city. The Nagpur Traffic Police invite citizens to support this initiative by adhering to traffic regulations and cooperating with authorities, creating a safer and more organized environment for all.
