Pune Metro Rail Project Expands with New Trains and Corridors

The Union Cabinet has officially approved Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, which includes the addition of 15 new trains and 45 coaches to the city’s metro fleet. This expansion aims to accommodate the increasing number of daily commuters in Pune.
On Saturday, June 28, Pune Metro’s official X (formerly Twitter) account announced that the enhanced fleet would address the growing demand for metro services. “Given the rising response to Pune Metro and the influx of passengers, we will soon add 15 new trains and 45 additional coaches to our fleet. This decision follows the approval of new metro routes and the increasing passenger crowd,” the tweet stated.
This development comes shortly after the Union Cabinet cleared two elevated corridors under Phase 2—Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi—which will span 12.75 km and feature 13 stations. The project is estimated to cost Rs 3,626 crore.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked that Pune is “developing in every sector” and highlighted that the Metro’s expansion “will boost public transport and make people’s lives easier.” The new extensions are expected to serve crucial IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential neighborhoods, ultimately enhancing ridership across the metro network.
Forecasts indicate that daily ridership could increase from 96,000 in 2027 to 349,000 by 2057, prompting the proactive addition of new trains to meet future demand.
The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited will oversee the project’s execution, with pre-construction activities such as topographical surveys and design consultancy already in progress. Officials believe that the new corridors will alleviate congestion on major routes like Paud Road and Nagar Road, providing safer and more eco-friendly transportation options for Pune’s growing population.
