Pune Floods: Khadakwasla Dam Release Triggers Crisis, Army Deployed Amid Heavy Rains

On Sunday, severe flooding struck residential areas in Pune due to heavy rainfall and the release of water from the Khadakwasla dam. In response to the crisis, the Maharashtra government mobilized army personnel to assist in managing the situation. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has issued urgent directives aimed at ensuring the safety of residents, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and immediate intervention.
The flooding was exacerbated by the release of water from several dams in the Pune region, including Khadakwasla, Mulshi, and Pavana, which overwhelmed low-lying neighborhoods. Chief Minister Shinde has instructed officials to relocate individuals living in flood-prone areas to safer locations. This operation will be supported by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and, if necessary, the army.
“The India Meteorological Department has cautioned us about ongoing heavy rains,” Shinde stated. “It is crucial that we ensure those in at-risk areas are moved to safety and provided with essential support such as shelter, food, and medical assistance.”Affected neighborhoods include Dattwadi, Ekta Nagar, Patil Estate, Yerwada, and Shivaji Nagar, among others. The Chief Minister has stressed the importance of swiftly relocating residents near rivers and dams. District officials and the Pune Municipal Corporation have been tasked with coordinating evacuation efforts and providing necessary aid.
On Sunday, the Khadakwasla dam released 35,000 cusecs of water, resulting in significant water accumulation, particularly around Ekta Nagar and Dwarka Society on Sinhgad Road. To support evacuation and relief operations, a unit from the Indian Army has been deployed to Ekta Nagar. With forecasts predicting continued heavy rainfall, officials are closely monitoring the situation and preparing for any further action necessary to safeguard the affected communities.
