Gorewada Zoo to Send Two Tigers to Jaipur Zoo as Part of Animal Exchange Program

Gorewada International Zoo is all set to send two tigers to Jaipur Zoo as part of an animal exchange program. In exchange, Gorewada Zoo has welcomed a pair of striped hyenas, grey wolves, and sloth bears from Jaipur Zoo, enhancing its diverse collection of wildlife.

The new arrivals reached Nagpur on Friday, transported in four different vehicles, accompanied by a team from Jaipur Zoo to assist with the transition. Shatnik Bhagwat, the Director of Gorewada Zoo, shared that this marks the first time the zoo has received striped hyenas, while the addition of grey wolves is particularly noteworthy, as they are considered a rare species in the region.

The striped hyena is classified as near-threatened, while the grey wolf is endangered, with its range extending from Southwest Asia to the Indian subcontinent. Bhagwat explained that the new animals will initially be housed in a rescue center to acclimate to their new surroundings before being moved to specially designed enclosures. During this adjustment period, they will be kept away from the public to minimize stress.

Currently, Gorewada Zoo is home to two tigers, six leopards, four sloth bears, and approximately 70 herbivores, alongside various species of birds. The zoo has recently acquired additional herbivores and birds from the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden in Lucknow. As part of the ongoing exchange program, Gorewada Zoo will also send two sloth bears to Lucknow, which will bring the total number of sloth bears at Gorewada Zoo to six.

As the exchange program continues, more animals are expected to arrive at Gorewada Zoo soon, further enriching its wildlife collection and enhancing conservation efforts. Stay tuned to know more about it and others only with us and if you have anything to share, you can comment below.
