PM Narendra Modi’s Pune Visit Cancelled Amid Heavy Rainfall
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Pune on Thursday has been cancelled due to the heavy rainfall affecting the city, according to reports from ANI. The Prime Minister was set to launch several key projects valued at ₹22,600 crores, including the inauguration of the Pune Metro section from District Court to Swargate, a significant milestone in completing the Pune Metro Rail Project (Phase-1). The cost of the underground section connecting District Court and Swargate is approximately ₹1,810 crore. In light of the severe weather conditions, the Pune district administration has ordered the closure of schools and colleges in Pune city and the Pimpri Chinchwad area for Thursday. This precautionary measure follows an orange alert issued by the Meteorological Department for Thane, Raigad,
Mumbai, and Pune on September 26. An orange alert has also been declared for Nashik and Dhule districts in northern Maharashtra, indicating the potential for dangerous weather. District collector Suhas Divase issued this directive in response to the India Meteorological Department’s warning of expected rains, lightning, and thunderstorms in the region. Earlier on Wednesday evening, Pune experienced significant rainfall, resulting in waterlogging in various areas, which heightened concerns about public safety.
Also, the water resources department issued an alert on Wednesday, cautioning residents about the forecast of heavy rains from September 24 to September 29. They warned that this could lead to increased water discharge from the dams on the Mutha and Pawana rivers, urging people to remain vigilant. As the city grapples with the aftermath of the rain, local authorities are working to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents during this challenging weather.
