Maharashtra Govt Approves Renaming of Pune Airport

The Maharashtra government has officially approved the proposal to rename Pune airport, which will now be known as Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Airport. This proposal will be forwarded to the Centre for final approval.Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had previously expressed his support for the name change, assuring that he would advocate for its approval at the central level. Murlidhar Mohol, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, announced on X that the initial step toward renaming the Pune international airport to ‘Jagadguru Santshrestha Tukaram Maharaj Pune International Airport’ has been successfully taken.
This decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.“Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj was born in Lohegaon, the very location of Pune International Airport. Furthermore, Tukaram Maharaj spent his childhood in Lohegaon, establishing a strong connection between them,” Mohol stated.He also expressed gratitude to the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra for endorsing the proposal. Last month, Mohol, a Lok Sabha member from Pune, had submitted the initiative to Chief Minister Shinde to honor Sant Tukaram Maharaj with this naming.
In a prior post on X, Mohol detailed that renaming an airport involves a proposal that must be approved by the state government before being sent to the central government for final consideration. He expressed optimism that the Maharashtra government would back this initiative, allowing the proposal to be finalized and submitted to the Centre promptly.
