IMD Issues Flash Flood Warning for Pune Amid Rising Water Discharge from Dams

In the last day, Pune district in Maharashtra has seen a surge in water levels due to heavy rainfall, prompting increased water discharge from local dams. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Pune’s ghat regions and nearby areas. The alert extends to several districts, including Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Pune, Nashik, Nandurbar, Solapur, and Satara, with potential for low to moderate flash floods.

Significant rainfall has been recorded across various locations: Lonavala with 161.5 mm, Lavasa with 201 mm, Shivajinagar with 33.6 mm, Pashan with 35.1 mm, Chinchwad with 54.5 mm, and Koregaon Park with 22.5 mm. This resurgence of the monsoon has led the irrigation department to release water from dams such as Khadakwasla, Nira Deoghar, Warasgaon, Kasarasai, and Pavana.

The Mula Mutha river is currently nearing its danger level at Bund Garden, and several areas along the Mutha riverbank, particularly in the Deccan region, are experiencing flooding. With more rainfall forecasted, river discharge is expected to increase further on Sunday. On Saturday, flash floods trapped several vehicles on the Deccan side, prompting district authorities to caution residents to drive carefully through the ghats and stay vigilant near riverbeds.

The forecast suggests that the rainfall is not relenting anytime soon, with expectations of increased river discharge continuing into Sunday. The situation on Saturday saw numerous vehicles stranded in flash floods on the Deccan side, prompting warnings from district authorities. Residents have been advised to exercise extreme caution when driving through the ghats and to avoid areas near the riverbed, as the water levels are unpredictable and could rise swiftly with further rainfall.
