NMC Establishes Artificial Tanks for Shri Krishna Idol Immersion in Nagpur

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated a significant environmental effort by establishing artificial tanks across the city for the immersion of Shri Krishna idols. This initiative, launched one day prior to Janmashtami, aims to prevent idol immersions in natural water bodies, thereby safeguarding the environment.

These artificial tanks have been strategically placed at all lakes within the city and in various zones to ensure easy access for residents. Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, the Municipal Commissioner and Administrator, encourages citizens to utilize these tanks for idol immersion. He also emphasizes the importance of disposing of all offerings, or ‘nirmalya,’ in designated containers called ‘nirmalya kalash’ to maintain cleanliness.

The tanks are installed at key locations, including Sonegaon Lake, Gandhi Sagar Lake, Matru Sewa Sangh in Mahal, Manoj Hotel near Naik Talav, Hanuman Ghat near Naik Talav Garden Gate, Nagpure High School in Bharatwada, and near Gulmohar Nagar Hanuman Mandir.

To enforce this initiative, the NMC has prohibited idol immersion in natural water bodies and erected barricades around city lakes using tin sheets and bamboo. In addition, over 400 artificial tanks are planned for installation throughout the city ahead of the upcoming Ganesh festival, accompanied by ‘Nirmalya Kalash’ containers to ensure cleanliness during the festivities.

Moreover, the state government has taken a proactive stance by banning the manufacturing, sale, and use of Plaster of Paris (POP) idols during festivals. NMC teams will actively monitor local markets to enforce compliance with this ban and encourage the adoption of eco-friendly idols. This concerted effort by the NMC reflects a commitment to environmental preservation while honoring cultural traditions, making it a noteworthy initiative in Nagpur’s festive celebrations.
