Pune Civic Body Repeats Error, Misses 40% Property Tax Discount on Bills

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the state government recently approved a 40% discount in property tax for residents living in their own homes. However, the corporation has come under fire for not including this discount on the property tax bills for the 2025-26 fiscal year, leading to frustration among citizens and civic activists.Civic activist Vivek Velankar voiced his concerns, stating, “We had requested that the 40% discount be clearly indicated on property tax bills, and this demand was accepted by both the municipal commissioner and the PMC staff.
However, when I received my own property tax bill, I found no such notation.”Velankar criticized the PMC, suggesting that officials are intentionally causing confusion among taxpayers. “The PMC has all the necessary information stored on its computers. Printing the discount on the bills is not a complicated task. It would have been beneficial for residents to see whether they are receiving this discount. If someone is not getting this benefit, they should be able to apply to the PMC for it,” he explained. “Yet, the PMC has failed to deliver once again.
Last year, the civic body sent out bills without mentioning the 40% property tax discount as well.”The oversight has sparked outrage among residents, who feel misled and frustrated by the PMC’s lack of transparency. Many citizens are now questioning whether they will ever see the promised benefits reflected in their tax bills. As the issue continues to unfold, local residents and activists are calling for immediate action from the PMC to rectify the situation and ensure that property tax bills accurately reflect the eligible discounts.
