State Approves 31.64-Km Stretch for Pune Metro Phase 2

The Maharashtra government has given the green light for a 31.64-km stretch of Pune Metro Phase 2 during a cabinet meeting on Monday. The project, managed by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), encompasses two vital routes: Khadakwasla to Kharadi via Swargate and Hadapsar, and Nal Stop to Manik Baug via Warje. The estimated total cost of the project is ₹9,897.19 crore, with plans for 28 stations along the new elevated routes. Work on the project will commence following approval from the Centre.
The Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi route will cover 25.518 km and include 22 stations, with an estimated cost of ₹8,131.81 crore. Meanwhile, the Nal Stop-Warje-Manik Baug route will span 6.118 km, featuring six stations, and is projected to cost ₹1,765.38 crore.The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) submitted the draft detailed project report (DPR) to the state government in August of the previous year.Shravan Hardikar, managing director of Maha-Metro, remarked, “The new metro lines will significantly alleviate traffic congestion on major routes such as Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and Solapur Road, while providing essential connectivity to areas like Pimpri-Chinchwad, Ramwadi, Vanaz, and Swargate.
Pune Member of Parliament Muralidhar Mohal stated, “The Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi and Nal Stop-Dahanukar Colony-Warje-Manik Baug metro lines have received approval from the Mahayuti government in the cabinet meeting. This approval will further enhance Pune’s metro network and improve public transportation within the city.”Before granting approval, the state government allocated ₹1 crore for the preparation of the alternative analysis report (AAR) and the DPR for Pune Metro Phase 2.
This order was issued by Vijay Chaudhari, deputy secretary of the State Urban Development Department, last Friday.Maha-Metro has been tasked with preparing the DPR and AAR for seven new metro extensions, totaling 82.5 km under Phase 2. These extensions include the Khadakwasla-Kharadi and Paud Phata-Manik Baug routes, as well as additional links from Ramwadi to Wagholi and Vanaz to Chandni Chowk. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has agreed to fund 50% of the total project cost.
