Pune Reports Seven More Zika Virus Cases Following Floods; Authorities Urge Calm as Total Rises to 73
Pune has reported seven additional Zika virus cases on Wednesday, following heavy rainfall that caused flooding in various parts of the district. According to data from the Pune Municipal Corporation, a total of 73 individuals have tested positive since the first case emerged on June 20. Tragically, four senior citizens have died due to pre-existing health conditions after contracting the virus. Officials clarified, “Four patients who tested positive for the virus have died, but their deaths were attributed to pre-existing health conditions, not the Zika infection. They were aged between 68 and 78. Among those infected, there are 26 pregnant women who are being closely monitored, and fortunately, most of them are in good health.
Despite the rising case numbers, health authorities have urged the public not to panic and advised anyone experiencing fever or related symptoms to get tested. To combat the outbreak, Pune’s health department has implemented several measures, including surveillance and fumigation to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. Additionally, details regarding the deceased will be shared with the Maharashtra government’s death audit committee for further review.
According to a WHO fact sheet, “Most people with Zika virus infection do not develop symptoms. Those who do may experience rash, fever, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache lasting 2–7 days.” The infection is also linked to serious conditions such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and myelitis in both adults and children. Zika virus infection during pregnancy can lead to microcephaly, a condition characterized by an abnormally small head due to improper brain development, along with other congenital malformations, preterm birth, and miscarriage. The virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which is most active during the day and can also spread dengue and chikungunya.
