GMCH Nagpur Unveils Transformed Auditorium After 72 Years

The historic auditorium of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur, Asia’s second-largest hospital, has undergone a remarkable transformation after 72 years. This upgrade has turned the auditorium into a state-of-the-art facility, ready to host seminars, workshops, and training sessions with modern amenities and enhanced comfort. The extensive renovation, costing Rs 5.23 crore, marks the first significant revamp since the medical college building was inaugurated by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in 1953.
Dr. Raj Gajbhiye, dean of GMCH, expressed his enthusiasm about the changes, stating, “Previously, the auditorium had a seating capacity of 375, but with the renovation, it has been expanded to 535. The new seating arrangement ensures clear visibility of the stage for everyone, even those seated at the back.” The auditorium is now fully air-conditioned, significantly enhancing the overall experience for attendees.The upgraded space features a large screen on stage, designed to facilitate live training sessions for students.
Also,  high-quality sound systems and attractive lighting arrangements have been installed, further brightening the venue and adding to its visual appeal.The surrounding premises have also seen improvements, with the facelift including the addition of two green rooms, drinking water facilities, and well-maintained restrooms. These enhancements ensure convenience for both students and faculty members, making the auditorium a more inviting and functional space for educational activities.
The transformation of GMCH’s auditorium is set to elevate the standard of medical education and training in the region. Dr. Gajbhiye expressed his satisfaction regarding the timely completion of the auditorium, stating, “It is now fully equipped to serve students, doctors, and faculty for meetings, discussions, workshops, and training sessions. The auditorium will soon be open for use. With these features, the newly renovated auditorium promises to be a valuable resource for the medical community at GMCH.
