Ganeshotsav 2024: Pune Metro Records Nearly 2 Lakh Passengers in a Single Day
As citizens flocked from Kothrud, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Ramwadi, and other areas to experience the vibrant public Ganesha Mandals in central Pune, metro traffic surged to an impressive peak of around two lakh passengers on Saturday, September 14. From the afternoon onward, metro coaches were filled to capacity, and the stations buzzed with activity. The metro currently operates on the Vanaz to Ramwadi and Pimpri to Shivajinagar Court routes. On Saturday, over 175,000 passengers utilized the metro service between 6 am and 8 pm, with operations extending until midnight.
Passenger traffic on the Vanaz to Shivajinagar Court route reached approximately 60%, while the routes from Pimpri to Shivajinagar Court and Ramwadi to Shivajinagar Court also saw heavy crowds. Many passengers disembarked at key stations like Shivajinagar Court, Deccan Gymkhana, and Sambhaji Udyan to access the city center. The influx of passengers began to rise significantly from Saturday afternoon. To reach the city, many citizens parked their vehicles at suburban metro stations, avoiding the hassle of long-distance parking in the city. The metro service provided significant relief to these travelers. Previously, during the month of Vari on Ashadhi Ekadashi, the metro transported a maximum of 199,600 passengers, a record that was surpassed on Saturday, according to metro officials. In light of the Ganeshotsav celebrations, metro services have been enhanced.
While services are scheduled to continue until midnight on Sunday, September 15, the operating hours may be extended if passenger demand remains high. The sirens will signal the end of operations at midnight, after which citizens typically begin heading home. Should crowds persist beyond this time, the metro will remain operational. Lastly, on Ganesh Visarjan day, the metro will commence operations at 6 am on Tuesday, September 17, and will run continuously until 10 pm on Wednesday, September 18. This means that the metro will be available for over 24 hours during the Ganesh Visarjan festivities, ensuring convenience for all attendees.
