Pune Airport’s Old Terminal to Be Demolished and Redeveloped, Confirms Mohol

Following the transition of airline operations from the old terminal to the new terminal at Pune International Airport, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced plans to demolish the former structure for redevelopment. Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol and Minister of State (MoS) for Civil Aviation and Cooperation made this announcement in the city on Tuesday.Mohol stated, “Various projects are currently underway at Pune airport. The new terminal building was inaugurated last year, and now nearly all airlines have shifted their operations there. The few remaining operations at the old terminal will soon move to the new terminal, after which the old terminal will be demolished and redeveloped.
According to information from the AAI Pune administration, the redevelopment plan for the old terminal includes converting its existing arrival hall into an extended departure hall. This new area will connect to the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) via a corridor. This strategic initiative aims to meet increasing passenger demands and enhance operational efficiency. The revamped area will feature 16 additional check-in counters to streamline passenger processing and reduce wait times. Additionally, a state-of-the-art security check area will be established, equipped with advanced Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs) and X-ray machines to bolster security and expedite screening.
Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke further elaborated, “Alongside these enhancements, the project will integrate existing airport systems with those of the NITB, ensuring seamless operations across terminal facilities. The expansion will also introduce retail shops, providing passengers with a broader range of services and amenities during their journey. This development will add a total area of 4,000 square meters, representing a significant investment of ₹25 crore.”Currently, around 15 arrivals and 15 departures from certain airlines continue to operate from the old terminal. Mohol added that these operations are expected to shift to the new terminal by next month, after which the demolition and redevelopment of the old terminal will commence.
