Progress on Nagpur Metro Phase 2 Moves Ahead Amidst Facing Challenges

The second phase of the Nagpur Metro project is advancing rapidly along the Kamptee-Kanhan corridor, with the construction of pillars and viaducts nearing the outskirts of Kamptee. Concurrently, soil testing and initial station work are in progress. However, the rising issue of encroachments, coupled with a lack of police presence, poses a significant threat to traffic management as the project moves into its next phase.Disparities in road width across Kamptee have created inconsistent conditions for construction.
While some sections provide sufficient space for Metro development, others are hindered by encroachments, resulting in frequent traffic jams. Motorists are already experiencing long delays, with local police concentrating more on issuing traffic fines than on facilitating smoother vehicular movement.Akhilesh Halwe, Public Relations Officer for Nagpur Metro, reported that approximately 95% of the land acquisition for Phase 2 in Kamptee has been completed. “Along the Kamptee-Nagpur highway, we’ve deployed a substantial workforce, erected safety barricades, posted traffic marshals, and installed speed breakers to mitigate accident risks,” he explained.Halwe also assured that similar safety measures will be implemented within Kamptee town.
“To minimize disruptions, heavy construction activities will be conducted during night hours,” he added. In response to concerns regarding roadside encroachments, Halwe clarified that the removal of these encroachments falls outside the jurisdiction of the Metro authorities. He emphasized the necessity for coordinated efforts between civic bodies and law enforcement to effectively manage traffic disruptions during the construction phase.
