Nylon Manja Claims 3 Lives in Nagpur and Surrounding Areas, Leaves Police Officer Critical on Makar Sankranti

The banned nylon manja has led to a grim series of incidents during Makar Sankranti celebrations, resulting in three fatalities across Maharashtra and leaving a policeman in critical condition. As kites filled the skies, the dangers of this illegal material became tragically evident.In Nandurbar, a seven-year-old boy, Kartik Gorve, lost his life when a suspended length of manja slit his throat. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. In NashikSonu Dhotre, 23, was riding his bike when a piece of nylon manja cut into his throat. He was declared dead upon arrival at the civil hospital.
In other places like Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Sub-inspector Deepak Parde, 41, suffered severe throat injuries after being struck by manja, requiring 30 stitches and currently fighting for his life in the ICU, where his condition is described as critical.In Akola, another victim, Kiran Sonwane, also lost his life after nylon manja severed his windpipe while he was riding his bike. He collapsed immediately and was later pronounced dead.Additionally, in NagpurSohail Khan Salim Khan, 23, fell from a fifth-floor terrace while flying kites and was declared dead at the hospital.
Another individual, Ritesh Gandhshriwar, 27, collapsed while chasing a kite and died shortly after.The tragic incidents extended beyond fatalities; several others sustained injuries from nylon manja in cities like PuneNashik, and Nagpur. In Pune, Devaram Dattatray Kamthe, 67, was injured by the dangerous material while riding a two-wheeler.In response to these incidents, Mumbai police registered 19 cases for the illegal use of nylon manja between January 10 and 13, resulting in arrests and seizures valued at ₹35,350. Authorities continue to emphasize the dangers posed by this hazardous kite-flying material.
