Nagpur Municipal Corporation Cancels 783 Birth, Death Certificates Over Irregularities

In a significant administrative move, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has annulled 783 birth and death certificates issued between August 11, 2023, and January 21, 2025. This decision follows a directive from the Maharashtra Revenue and Forest Department, which identified procedural violations in the authorization of these documents.
The cancelled certificates were reportedly approved by Naib Tehsildar-level officers, who, according to state regulations, lack the authority to sanction delayed birth or death registrations. Current rules stipulate that such approvals must be granted by officials of Tehsildar rank or higher. This revocation is part of a broader initiative to combat fraudulent certification practices throughout the state.
Authorities are currently investigating a significant scam in which over 3,000 forged birth certificates are believed to have been issued using falsified documentation. The scam came to light following enforcement raids in Malegaon and is suspected of facilitating foreign nationals—particularly undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh and members of the Rohingya community—in unlawfully acquiring Indian identity documents.Officials have indicated that further scrutiny is ongoing, and additional actions may be taken as the investigation unfolds.
The Maharashtra government has expressed its commitment to ensuring that all identity documents are issued in accordance with the law, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity of official records. Officials are implementing stricter verification processes to prevent future occurrences of such fraudulent activities.
Also,  public awareness campaigns are being considered to educate citizens about the legal ramifications of engaging in or facilitating document fraud. Authorities have indicated that they will pursue legal action against those involved in the scam, and the investigation may lead to further arrests as more information comes to light. This crackdown highlights the ongoing efforts to protect the integrity of the nation’s identity verification systems.
