Nagpur Cops Launch Four-Part Series to Explore Child-Friendly Policing

Amidst the countless crime reports that inundate our daily news consumption and the stacks of case files in police stations, lie the untold stories of individuals and their circumstances. Embedded within these narratives are the stories of children in diverse roles, and the police officers who go above and beyond their call of duty.During a workshop on the Juvenile Justice System organized by the Nagpur city police in partnership with Prakruthi Trust, an NGO working in this domain, four police personnel shared instances when they extended their duties far beyond expectations.

  1. Megha Gokhare, Assistant Police Inspector at Yashodhara Nagar PS, encountered a boy involved in illegal liquor selling from a disadvantaged family background during her early years in the police force. She stepped outside the boundaries of law and guided the boy and his father towards an alternative livelihood, initiating a successful fish-selling business. Gokhare personally funded the boy’s education, leading to his admission into an engineering college and subsequent employment at a prestigious IT company.
  2. Mosami Katre, Police Sub Inspector at Sitabuldi PS, took on the role of a mentor to children in a slum in Nagpur, characterized by minors engaging in romantic relationships and eloping, often resulting in juvenile pregnancies and adverse consequences. Through consistent mentoring, Katre facilitated the educational and career growth of several children from the slum, fostering aspirations and achievements in sports, education, and self-employment.
  3. Minakshi Katole, Police Sub Inspector at Bajaj Nagar PS, faced a chilling case during the COVID pandemic involving a 13-year-old girl who became pregnant after watching explicit content on a smartphone and engaging in sexual activities. Katole and her team went above and beyond regular policing, disguising as NMC surveyors to gather information and persuading the girl to provide a statement.
  4. Sudhir Khubalkar, currently serving as head constable at Shanti Nagar police station, demonstrated remarkable dedication by tracing 92 missing persons in the last twelve months. His relentless pursuit and commitment to reuniting distressed families earned him commendation from Dr. Ravinder Singal, Commissioner of Police, Nagpur City. These stories signify the potential of effective and child-friendly policing, emphasizing the importance of judgment-free constructive policing in cases involving children.
