Heavy Rains Washes out Nagpur with 138 mm rains; Residents of Low-Lying Areas Evacuated Amidst Red Alert

Heavy rainfall lashed Maharashtra’s Nagpur city and parts of the district on Saturday morning, leading to disruptions in normal life as water inundated low-lying areas. As a precautionary measure, authorities moved people to safer locations and declared a holiday for schools and colleges for the day.Approximately 50 students were stranded in their college in the Hudkeshwar Nagar area of the city due to flooding, but were subsequently rescued. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rainfall, with the possibility of extremely heavy showers at isolated places in Nagpur and other districts of the Vidarbha region over the next two days. The IMD advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors.
The IMD issued a red alert for Chandrapur and an orange alert for Nagpur, Amravati, and Wardha districts for Saturday. Nagpur experienced heavy rainfall for approximately three hours on Saturday, starting around 8:30 am, with the intensity decreasing significantly after 11:30 am.The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Nagpur recorded 135.6 mm of rainfall from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, and 0.3 mm from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. The observatory at the Nagpur airport recorded 90.6 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Saturday.In response to the downpour, the Nagpur district collector declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the city and rural areas on Saturday. Additionally, around 50 students of Antalika College in Hudkeshwar Nagar were stranded due to waterlogging on the premises but were rescued by the fire brigade personnel of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the police.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who hails from Nagpur, directed the district administration to ensure citizens do not face inconvenience due to the rains. He took to social media to share updates and stated that a holiday had been declared for schools, and residents of low-lying areas, where water had entered, had been relocated to safer places.The RMC issued a warning for the next three hours, indicating intense rainfall at isolated places in Bhandara, Nagpur, and Gondia districts of Vidarbha. It also issued a moderate flash flood warning for certain watersheds and neighborhoods in Amaravati, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, and Nagpur districts.
