Gorewada Rescue Centre Set to Relocate 15 Tigers to Jamnagar

The Maharashtra Forest Department is gearing up for its next move. They are all set to transfer 15 tigers from the Gorewada Rescue Centre in Nagpur to the Greens Zoological, Rescue, and Rehabilitation Centre in Jamnagar. With the Gorewada facility currently housing 29 tigers and 30 leopards, it has reached its capacity for large carnivores. Importantly, none of these animals will be released back into the wild due to their injuries or problematic behavior.“ This transfer is part of a decongestion process because Gorewada has exceeded its capacity,” explained Shatnik Bhagwat, the Zoo Director. “The Jamnagar facility is well-equipped to accommodate the tigers.”
The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) approved the transfer at the end of August, and Bhagwat clarified that this is not an exchange; the tigers will simply be relocated to another rescue center. The transfer is anticipated to occur within the coming days, with a specialized team from Jamnagar arriving with vehicles designed for the safe transportation of the animals. Among the 15 tigers being moved, six are male and nine are female. Notably, three of these tigers are currently receiving treatment for their injuries at the Gorewada facility, and measures will be taken to ensure their safety during the transfer process. The decision to relocate the tigers was authorized by Maheep Gupta, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), just before his retirement on August 31.
However, the impending transfer has ignited protests from the Ambedkari Republican Morcha, who claim that the Gorewada Rescue Centre serves as a vital tourist attraction in Nagpur. They argue that the tigers should remain at the facility to continue drawing visitors and supporting local tourism. As discussions continue, the future of these tigers and their new home remains a topic of significant public interest.
