Cold Wave Alert: Pune Records Lowest Temperature of the Season

Pune city experienced its lowest minimum temperature of the season at 9°C on December 15, with cold conditions anticipated to last for the next 24 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert for isolated areas within Pune district, although no specific warning has been given for Pune city itself. Senior meteorologist S.D. Sanap from IMD Pune clarified that the alert is primarily focused on certain isolated regions in the district.

Temperature Records

On December 15, at least 10 weather stations in Pune district recorded single-digit temperatures. The lowest temperature was noted at Shivajinagar with 9°C, while Pashan registered 9.3°C. The NDA station recorded a drop to 8°C, marking the coldest temperature in the district.

Widespread Alerts

In addition to Pune, the IMD has also issued cold wave alerts for isolated areas in seven other districts across central and northern Maharashtra on December 16. These districts include Ahmednagar, Beed, Parbhani, Jalna, Aurangabad, Jalgaon, and Gondia. Notably, Ahmednagar recorded the lowest temperature in Maharashtra, dropping to 6.4°C, the coldest of the season in the state. Nagpur in Vidarbha reported a minimum temperature of 7°C.

Weather Influences

The significant drop in temperature is attributed to the influence of cool northern winds and a stable low-pressure system located in Lakshadweep and the Maldives. This weather pattern has notably affected Maharashtra, leading to a marked decrease in temperatures across the central and northern regions of the state.

Future Forecast

According to the official IMD forecast, dry weather is expected to persist in most parts of Maharashtra, including Pune, until December 16. However, light to moderate rainfall is anticipated in the Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts on December 19.
