Roads in Central Pune to Remain Closed on January 19; Schools and Colleges to Observe Holiday

Pune city traffic police have announced extensive road closures and diversions across key central areas on Monday, January 19, ahead of the Prologue Race of the Pune Grand Challenge Tour 2026. This international cycling event is jointly organised by the Pune district administration and the Cycling Federation of India (CFI).The prologue features an 8-km individual time trial starting at Goodluck Chowk on Fergusson College Road and concluding at the Deccan Gymkhana bus stop on Jungli Maharaj Road.

To minimize disruption, authorities have declared a holiday for schools and colleges in several municipal wards. Educational institutions along major routes including Fergusson College Road, University Road, Jungli Maharaj Road, and surrounding areas will remain closed for the day.Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Ranjan Kumar Sharma stated that traffic restrictions will be in effect from 9 am to 6 pm, impacting large parts of Shivajinagar, Deccan, and nearby localities.

“These measures are essential to ensure the safe and smooth conduct of the cycling event and to prevent vehicular movement along the race corridor during peak hours,” he explained.Traffic officials have urged commuters to plan their journeys ahead of time, utilize public transport options such as Metro services, and avoid central Pune on Monday.

Emergency services will continue to operate uninterrupted. Strict no-parking rules will be enforced along all race routes throughout the day.Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil emphasised that these restrictions are vital for the safety and successful execution of one of Pune’s largest international sporting events. He appealed to citizens for their patience and cooperation in planning travel accordingly.
