Auto Drivers Demand Fare Hike Following CNG Price Increase in Pune

Autorickshaw unions have formally approached the state transport department, requesting a ₹3 increase in the base fare to counterbalance the recent ₹2 per kilogram rise in compressed natural gas (CNG) prices. This request comes as the unions aim to mitigate the financial impact of the CNG price hike on their operations. They are also concerned about the potential for further increases of ₹2 to ₹4 per kilogram in the near future, prompting them to advocate for an adjustment in the per-kilometer fare as well.
On Friday, just before the assembly poll results were announced, Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL) raised the price of CNG to ₹87.90 per kilogram in Pune, which includes areas like Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan, Talegaon, and Hinjewadi. Ali Daruwalla, president of the All India Petrol Dealers’ Association, noted that this increase is a temporary measure influenced by international events, and he anticipates that CNG, petrol, and diesel prices will eventually decrease.Union representatives have expressed that the CNG price hike will significantly affect auto drivers, who typically fill their vehicles with 2 to 3 kilograms of CNG daily.
Given the rising operational costs and the expectation of further price hikes from MNGL, the unions are urging the transport department to consider raising the per-kilometer fare to help drivers cope with these challenges. In summary, the autorickshaw unions are advocating for a fare increase to address the financial strain caused by rising CNG prices, emphasizing the need for timely adjustments to ensure the sustainability of their livelihoods.
