Aundh Residents in Pune Hold Vigil for Assault Victim, Demand Security for Morning Walkers

The shocking and tragic assault on a local resident by a group of rowdy minors on Thursday morning has deeply affected the residents of Aundh. In response, dozens of residents gathered on Saturday evening to pay their condolences to the departed and address the issue of safety and security in the area. A candlelight vigil was held to express solidarity with the late Sameer Roychowdury, a resident of Sayali Garden residential society in Aundh, who was attacked by a group of allegedly intoxicated youngsters and sadly passed away on Friday. Mukund Kirdat, spokesperson for the Aam Aadmi Party, Maharashtra, highlighted that this incident is not an isolated case and that there is a prevailing fear among people who venture out in the neighborhood.
Concerns about the safety of family members who leave home in the morning and whether they will return safely are being raised. Kirdat pointed out the systemic failure in various departments, including the police, encroachment, excise, and traffic police. He questioned the notion of “smartness,” emphasizing that it should go beyond just having well-maintained footpaths. Kirdat expressed disappointment in the lack of proper lighting on the road, despite it being the first road inaugurated by PM Modi for the city. Residents like Nagini Patil, 35, from Ashna Park, now feel worried about going for morning walks in light of this recent incident.
She acknowledged that the police cannot be everywhere at all times and questioned who is providing alcohol to minors and where it is being served below the legal age of 18.Senior Police Inspector Shailesh Sankhe, who recently began his tenure at the Chatushrungi Police Station, assured residents that steps have already been taken to address the situation where the incident occurred. The police are actively reaching out to residents to understand their concerns, promising appropriate action. Patrols have been increased, and the police are fully committed to ensuring the safety of everyone to the best of their abilities. However, a participant in the gathering expressed the need to assess the police’s response over a fortnight to determine whether it is a consistent and sustained effort or merely a temporary reaction.
