Pune Heats Up Again After Brief Relief; IMD Forecasts Possible Respite This Week

Pune residents can expect a largely clear sky on Tuesday, with temperatures ranging from 18 degrees Celsius to 37 degrees Celsius. After a brief drop, temperatures in the city have begun to rise again, with the Koregaon Park automatic weather station (AWS) recording a peak temperature of 40.9 degrees Celsius on Monday. This area has consistently reported higher-than-normal temperatures over the past few weeks. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune is currently experiencing hot and humid conditions that could pose serious health risks if proper precautions are not taken. The IMD defines this situation as one where maximum temperatures exceed normal levels by at least 3 degrees Celsius, combined with high humidity.
Such conditions are particularly hazardous as elevated humidity slows down the evaporation of sweat, the body’s natural cooling mechanism, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. In addition to Koregaon Park, other areas such as Dhamdhere (40.4 degrees Celsius), Dudulgaon (39.8 degrees Celsius), Chinchwad (39.7 degrees Celsius), and Magarpatta (39 degrees Celsius) have also reported unusually high temperatures. Shivajinagar recorded a temperature of 38.2 degrees Celsius, which is above the normal range, as noted in an Indian Express report.
As per the IMD’s weekly weather forecast, the maximum temperature is expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius this week, with variations in both daytime and nighttime temperatures. To help mitigate the effects of the heat, the IMD has issued an advisory recommending that residents wear loose cotton clothing, stay hydrated, and cover their heads when going outdoors. It also urges people to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during peak daytime hours, to prevent heatstroke and other related health issues.
