Drunk Engineering Student Runs Over 7 on Nagpur Footpath, Killing 2

A tragic incident unfolded in the Dighori area of Nagpur on Monday, as a car, allegedly driven by a drunk engineering student, plowed into a group of people sleeping on a footpath, resulting in the crushing deaths of two women, according to a police official. Four children and three other individuals were also injured in the accident, which occurred at 12:40 am, as reported by the Wathoda police station official.The victims were identified as Kantibai Gajod Bagdiya (42) and Sitaram Babulal Bagdiya (30), who were part of a family that sells toys and resides on the footpath.
The official stated that the car involved was a Hyundai Verna, and the driver, Bhushan Lanjewar, along with five other occupants, all of whom were under the influence of alcohol, attempted to flee the scene. However, Lanjewar was later apprehended based on CCTV footage. The injured individuals, including Kavita Sitaram Bagdiya (28), Balku Sitaram Bagdiya (8), Hasina Sitaram Bagdiya (3), Sakina Sitaram Bagdiya (2), Hanuman Khajod Bagdiya (35), and Vikram Bhusha Hanuman Bagdiya (10), have been admitted to the Government Medical College & Hospital. According to Rajendra Babulal Bagdiya (34), who escaped unharmed, the family had come to Nagpur eight months ago and were sleeping on the footpath after dinner.
He informed the police that the vehicle initially struck them and caused additional injuries when the driver reversed. Lanjewar has been charged under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act, as stated by the Wathoda police station official. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of drunk driving and the importance of responsible behavior on the road.
