22-Year-Old Woman Gangraped in Pune, Three Suspects Booked, Say Police

Three men have been booked in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 22-year-old woman at Pune’s Bopdev Ghat late Thursday night. An FIR was registered the following morning, and police are actively searching for the accused. The victim and her 22-year-old friend, both college students from outside Pune, had traveled to the Bopdev Ghat area on a motorcycle. Around 11 PM, three men arrived on their bikes and reportedly threatened the pair. According to a senior police officer, the assailants tied the male friend with a rope, then dragged the woman away to a secluded area where she was gang-raped. After the attackers fled, the woman returned to her friend, released him, and they sought help.They first went to a private hospital, but due to the medico-legal nature of the case, they were directed to Sassoon General Hospital, where doctors alerted the Pune city police. The incident was reported around 5 AM on Friday, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Joint Commissioner of Pune City Police, confirmed that ten teams from the Crime Branch and Detection Branch have been assigned to the case.In response to the incident, police have increased patrolling in the Bopdev Ghat area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the state forest department.
Authorities are discussing the installation of night-vision CCTV cameras and signage to enhance safety measures. Police have released sketches of two suspects based on the victim’s descriptions and are urging the public to provide any information about them. This incident follows a recent arrest of 36-year-old R. K. Pathan, who was accused of molesting a 20-year-old woman at the same location. Additionally, last year, police apprehended a gang responsible for robberies in Bopdev Ghat after a complaint from a victim who was attacked by armed men.
