Union Budget Allocates ₹295.64 Crore for Nag River Project

In the Union Budget 2025-26, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has allocated ₹295.64 crore to the Nag River Pollution Abatement Project in Nagpur. This funding aims to accelerate the restoration of the historically and culturally significant Nag River.

Project Overview

The ₹1,927 crore project will be executed in five phases, focusing on preventing untreated sewage from entering the river. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the nodal agency, has appointed Tata Consulting Engineers Limited (TCE) as the consultant. Ground surveys are currently underway, with construction set to begin upon completion.

Key Features

The project will include:

  • Developing a sewerage system by laying pipelines along riverbanks.
  • Setting up sewage treatment plants (STPs) to prevent domestic and industrial waste from flowing into the Nag and Pili Rivers.

These measures aim to improve sanitation, restore the river’s ecosystem, and address pollution caused by waste from Central and North Nagpur.

Timeline and Funding

Though the project is expected to be completed in eight years, NMC is working to finish it within five years. The funding distribution is as follows:

  • 60% from the central government.
  • 25% from the state government.
  • 15% from NMC.

A significant portion of the project will be funded through a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) loan.

Expanded Scope

In addition to the Nag River, the project will also address pollution in the Pohra and Pili Rivers, enhancing Nagpur’s overall water infrastructure.Officials believe this initiative will greatly improve environmental conditions while preserving the ecological and historical significance of these rivers.
