Retired Pune Bank Officer Falls Victim to Cyber Fraud, Loses ₹33 Lakh via Facebook Link

A shocking incident has unfolded involving a 61-year-old retired special assistant from a public sector bank, who fell victim to a cybercriminal, losing a staggering Rs 33 lakh. The woman, residing in the Shivdarshan area, believed she was applying for a credit card through a link shared on her Facebook page, which she assumed was from her former employer. Unfortunately, this decision led to dire consequences.On December 8, the victim received a call from an unknown number, with the caller claiming to represent her previous bank. During the conversation, the caller sent her an Android Package Kit (APK) file, instructing her to fill in her bank account details.
Trusting the source, the woman downloaded the file and unwittingly granted the crook access to her cellphone, ultimately compromising her personal information.The following day, she was horrified to discover that Rs 33 lakh had been siphoned off from her three bank accounts through six transactions made via a phone banking service. The alarming realization hit her when she received an alert notifying her of a Rs 5 lakh debit from her account. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, she promptly lodged a complaint with the Parvati police on Wednesday.
Authorities have since registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. The investigating officer revealed that the police are currently seeking transaction details from the complainant’s bank accounts.This incident underscores the rising threat of cybercrime, particularly among senior citizens. It serves as a crucial reminder for individuals to exercise caution when clicking on links and sharing personal information online, as the digital landscape is fraught with potential dangers.
