Railways to Launch 60 New Trains and Add 6 Platforms in Pune Suburban Network

The Pune suburban railway system is all set for a major upgrade, with plans to introduce 60 new suburban trains and construct six additional platforms at various stations. This expansion aims to boost passenger capacity and streamline suburban rail services in Pune and its surrounding areas, officials confirmed.
It was Mr. Hemant Kumar Behera, the spokesperson for the Pune railway division who shared the details. While talking to the media, he highlighted that the project will not only increase the number of trains but also enhance punctuality, reduce waiting times, and ensure safer, smoother operations. He added that the initiative is expected to ease traffic congestion in Pune by reducing the burden on road transport.
As of now, Pune manages around 110 suburban train services daily, a figure expected to rise to nearly 180 in the next phase. Train services between Pune and Daund will increase from 75 to approximately 125. This expansion is projected to benefit nearly 300,000 daily suburban rail commuters.
Of the total services, 280 trains will operate from Pune station, including 110 originating services. The number of originating suburban trains will see a significant jump, improving scheduling flexibility and easing overcrowding. Presently, Pune has only five originating suburban trains, but this will increase substantially with the new infrastructure.
To support this growth, six new platforms will be built at key stations, alongside extensions of existing central platforms. Hadapsar station will have three platform extensions, while Khadki station’s platforms will be lengthened by three to four coaches.
Alandi will get a new coaching terminal with added pit lines and stabling facilities. Uruli (Kanchan) will receive 10 platforms—including five dedicated to local trains—plus two pit lines and stabling arrangements. Fursungi will also get five new stabling facilities for suburban trains. This comprehensive expansion promises a more efficient, comfortable, and reliable suburban rail experience for Pune’s commuters.
