PWD to Build First Foot-Overbridges on Inner Ring Road to Boost Pedestrian Safety

The Public Works Department (PWD) has finalized plans to construct its first-ever pair of foot-overbridges (FoBs) on Nagpur’s busy Inner Ring Road, aiming to enhance pedestrian safety along this high-traffic corridor. This initiative seeks to reduce unsafe road crossings and provide a secure passage for thousands of pedestrians daily.PWD officials have selected two high-footfall sites for the project — near Palloti High School on Gorewada Road and at Martin Nagar in Jaripatka.
Both locations are surrounded by educational institutions and a church, making them key pedestrian zones, explained Krusha Gharde, Executive Engineer, PWD, World Bank Division, Nagpur Region. Each foot-overbridge will measure 2.5 metres wide and 36 metres long. Officials anticipate these structures will drastically cut down accident risks by preventing pedestrians from crossing the fast-moving four-lane traffic on the Ring Road. While residents may initially take time to adjust, Gharde expressed confidence that the FoBs’ safety and convenience will encourage widespread adoption.
The Martin Nagar site experiences particularly heavy foot traffic due to the church attracting devotees on both sides of the road. Authorities from Palloti School and the church had approached PWD, voicing concerns about dangerous crossings and requesting FoBs. In response, PWD reviewed these appeals, conducted comprehensive surveys, and assessed project feasibility.Gorewada Road, home to Palloti High School, sees heavy pedestrian movement throughout the day.
With rising vehicle speeds and increased traffic volumes—driven by urban expansion and more four-wheelers—the risk to crossing pedestrians has escalated significantly. After thorough analysis, PWD identified these two sites as priority areas needing immediate intervention. The tender process for constructing the FoBs is nearing completion. According to Gharde, once contracts are awarded, contractors will mobilize resources, with a completion timeframe of 12 months set for both bridges.
