Pune’s Nagar Road traffic is under constant threat

A significant safety concern along the Maha Metro route between Ruby Hall and Ramwadi is the presence of broken slabs adjacent to the median under the track and at the Metro stations. These damaged slabs pose a risk in high-traffic areas, creating hazards for both motorists and two-wheeler riders, potentially leading to accidents or vehicle damage. Local municipal authorities and Maha Metro officials must promptly address this issue by removing the broken slabs and repairing the medians. Improving the condition of these slabs is essential for enhancing safety for all road users. Some divider slabs have fallen into the median slot beneath the metro route, while many others are visibly tilting outward, which poses a clear danger to commuters if they were to collapse.
Kalyani Nagar resident Drayson C. Dixon remarked, “Broken concrete slabs can be especially hazardous, particularly at high speeds or during low visibility. For two-wheeler riders, who are more vulnerable, hitting such obstacles can lead to severe injuries or even fatalities.” He further noted, “For larger vehicles like auto rickshaws, tempos, or cars, colliding with these slabs could cause the vehicle to overturn, resulting in significant damage and putting passengers at risk.”In a conversation with Pune Times Mirror, PMC deputy engineer for Yerwada, Chandrasen Nagtilak, admitted that he was unaware of the concrete slabs on the road beneath the metro track. He stated, “The median slabs were installed by Maha Metro to segregate the carriageways.
I will notify the concerned Metro official, Karun Kumar, to have the slabs removed immediately, as they could lead to serious accidents.”Maha Metro official Karun Kumar expressed frustration over the deliberate damage to public property, endangering commuters, pedestrians, and citizens. He explained, “In my experience with the Metro in cities like Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Surat, I have never encountered such a mentality where people willfully damage public property funded by taxpayers.” He added, “We have installed the median slabs properly under the metro track and stations along the route. However, we cannot be held responsible if locals engage in vandalism at places like Gunjan Chowk and other areas on Nagar Road.
