Pune Experiences Higher-Than-Usual Temperatures in February

Following an unexpectedly warm January, February in Pune is shaping up to be another sizzling month. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the ongoing higher temperatures to the absence of northerly winds and insufficient moisture in the air.Currently, Pune’s maximum temperatures range between 32-34°C, which is above average for this time of year. “February is expected to witness higher-than-usual temperatures,” said S.D. Sanap, a scientist at IMD, Pune.
Sanap explained that the lack of northerly cold winds is the primary reason for the temperature spike. “These winds have been absent, leading to higher-than-usual temperatures across central India and Maharashtra,” he said. While some moisture is present in the air, it is not enough to trigger rainfall, he added.January was particularly hot for Pune, with the city recording an all-time high of 35.9°C on January 29. According to IMD data, this year’s January ranked among the hottest in Pune’s history, with temperatures consistently rising from January 26 onward.
The IMD attributed this unusual warmth to an anticyclone that blocked the entry of cold northern winds earlier in the year, causing the temperature surge. As February progresses, residents of Pune can expect the warm conditions to persist. With the absence of cooling winds and limited moisture, the city is likely to experience a continuation of above-average temperatures. For citizens, this means adapting to the unseasonably warm weather and taking necessary precautions to stay cool and hydrated. Stay tuned to know more about this city and others only with us.
