Heavy Rainfall Transforms Pune’s Hinjewadi IT Park into a ‘Wave Pool’

On Saturday, continuous heavy rainfall turned Pune’s Hinjewadi IT Park into what can only be described as a ‘wave pool,’ causing significant inconvenience for commuters. Traffic came to a grinding halt as vehicles formed long queues, struggling to navigate through the submerged roads.
Viral videos captured the chaos, including one showing a bus partially submerged in floodwater, moving slowly as waves formed around it. Another Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) bus was also seen nearly submerged under the rising water.
Infrastructure Challenges in Hinjewadi
The Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi, home to around 400 IT and IT-enabled service companies, has been grappling with persistent infrastructure and drainage issues. These problems have been exacerbated by ongoing construction and metro work, which obstruct the natural flow of rainwater from the Marunji and Manchi mountains.
Calls for Urgent Action
NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule shared a video on social media showing the waterlogged roads in Hinjewadi, urging the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to address the situation immediately.
“Due to heavy rains, a large amount of water has accumulated near Ryan International School and many other areas in the Hinjewadi Phase 2 region.
It raises doubts about whether there is an effective drainage system in place here. Timely maintenance, such as cleaning the drains, is crucial. However, these tasks do not appear to have been completed on schedule. MIDC must urgently focus on this issue and implement long-term measures to prevent future water accumulation and inconvenience for residents,” she stated on X.
