PMC Proposes ₹408-Crore Plan to Upgrade Water Supply in Sinhagad Road Amid Rising GBS Cases

After grappling with difficulties in repairing the water supply network in the old city area, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is now tasked with revamping the water supply system in 34 newly added villages. These areas have recently reported multiple cases of Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) among residents.“The newly added regions also require a 24×7 supply of treated water.
We have divided the area into 13 packages for the implementation of the water supply project, and work has already commenced on three of these packages,” stated Nandkumar Jagtap, In-Charge of Water Supply at PMC.The PMC has developed a detailed project report (DPR) for the fourth package, which encompasses Narhe, Ambegaon Budruk, Kalewadi, and Jambhulwadi, with an estimated project cost of Rs 389 crore.“The DPR for the newly merged area of Sinhagad Road has been estimated at Rs 408 crore.
This funding will support the revamping of the water supply system in Dhayari, Khadakwasla, Nandoshi, Nanded, Kirkatwadi, and Sasanenagar,” Jagtap added.Notably, GBS cases have predominantly emerged from the Sinhagad Road area, which relies on water from a well refilled with untreated water from the Khadakwasla Dam.
To address this, the PMC has proposed the establishment of a water treatment plant at Khadakwasla to serve residents of both Sinhagad Road and Warje.Jagtap also highlighted that the PMC has invested Rs 1,417 crore in water projects within the old city area. Out of 141 supply zones in this region, work has been completed in 62 zones.“The project to revamp the water supply network is progressing rapidly within the old city limits.
Delays in implementation have stemmed from various challenges, including public opposition to water meter installations and the need for permissions to lay new pipelines through forest and defense land,” he noted.
