NMRDA Proposes Unified Transport Company for Nagpur Metropolitan Region

The Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has put forward a plan to establish a dedicated transport company, named Nagpur Metropolitan Parivahan Limited, aimed at modernizing and streamlining mobility services across the metropolitan area. This initiative, under Section 18 of the Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Authority Act, 2016, envisions creating a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to improve connectivity, integrate various transport systems, and align mobility planning with the region’s development objectives.
Currently, NMRDA manages planning for 693 villages spanning nine talukas in Nagpur district, encompassing rapidly expanding urban and semi-urban areas. With Nagpur emerging as a key medical, education, and service hub, alongside fast-growing industrial zones such as Butibori, Hingna, and MIHAN, traffic has intensified, putting pressure on existing transport infrastructure. At present, different modes like buses, metro rail, and auto-rickshaws largely operate independently, leading to overlapping routes, inconsistent service quality, and poor last-mile connectivity.
The proposed company aims to unify these modes on a single platform, overseeing bus and feeder services while introducing smart ticketing solutions, including app-based and card-based systems. Emphasizing multimodal integration, it will facilitate seamless transfers between metro, buses, and other public transit options. The plan focuses on creating an eco-friendly, citizen-centric mobility framework that offers affordable and reliable public transport to reduce reliance on private vehicles, ease congestion, and lower pollution levels.
All upcoming mobility projects will be synchronized with NMRDA’s broader development strategy to ensure coordinated urban growth.Following approval by the NMRDA board, the proposal will be submitted to the state government for final clearance. Upon sanction, the new company will operate as an SPV under NMRDA, spearheading a unified, sustainable transport network throughout the Nagpur Metropolitan Region.
