NMC to Launch ‘Healthy Streets Policy’ for Safer, Greener Roads in Nagpur

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), in partnership with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), is developing the city’s first-ever Healthy Streets Policy aimed at improving urban mobility and promoting public well-being. The initiative seeks to create streets that are safer, greener, and more inclusive for all residents.
Key features of the policy include enhanced infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, such as wider footpaths, dedicated cycle lanes, and safer intersections. It will prioritize walking, cycling, and public transport over private vehicles to foster a more sustainable urban environment. To ensure the policy reflects the needs of the community, NMC has invited citizens to share their experiences and suggestions through an online survey open until September 25 at bit.ly/41NDbVY.
Officials encourage residents to participate, noting the survey is brief but crucial in shaping the final framework. The urgency of this initiative is underscored by an ITDP study revealing that vehicles on Nagpur’s main roads frequently exceed speeds of 50 km/h, creating significant safety risks. The Healthy Streets Policy is thus a vital step toward building safer, more efficient streets—especially benefiting children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities.
