NMC Launches ‘Healthy Streets Network’ for Dharampeth–Shankar Nagar: Nagpur’s First Human-Centric Road Redesign

In a groundbreaking initiative to enhance urban mobility, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has approved the ‘Healthy Streets Neighbourhood Network’ for the Dharampeth–Shankar Nagar area—marking the city’s first major street redevelopment project that prioritizes safety, accessibility, and environmental sustainability.

Designed by Prasanna Desai Architects, Pune, the project covers 11 kilometres from Jhansi Rani Square to Ambazari Lake, weaving together eight key roads with Right of Way (RoW) widths ranging from 18 to 30 metres. The primary 9.5-km corridor connects Jhansi Rani Square to Ambazari Lake via Shankar Nagar and Ram Nagar, with additional linking roads contributing 1.5 km.

The redesign features continuous footpaths, dedicated cycling lanes, organized parking zones, enhanced junctions, and improved stormwater drainage systems. Major intersections such as Shankar Nagar Chowk, Bajaj Nagar Chowk, and Ram Nagar Chowk will be revamped to minimize traffic conflicts and boost pedestrian safety.

This “Healthy Street” concept shifts the emphasis from vehicle speed to human comfort—offering shaded sidewalks, clearly marked cycling paths, and safer pedestrian crossings. The initiative aims to reduce noise, pollution, and accident risks while promoting walking and cycling in these densely populated residential and institutional neighborhoods.

Environmental enhancements include tree-lined walkways, rainwater harvesting trenches, and green buffers, transforming the corridor into a climate-resilient urban space. Institutions like VNIT, LAD College, and the Institute of Engineers stand to benefit from improved access and safer routes for students.

Once completed, the Healthy Streets Network will serve as a benchmark for inclusive, sustainable, and community-focused urban design, redefining Nagpur’s roads as vibrant public spaces rather than just traffic corridors.
