Pune Metro Sees 24% Surge in Daily Ridership in July

The Pune Metro experienced a significant 24% increase in average daily rides in July compared to the previous ten months. Between September 2024 and June 2025, the system averaged 154,652 daily rides. However, in July, this number jumped to 192,204 average daily rides. The upward trend had already begun in June, when the metro recorded 174,702 daily rides. From September 2024 through May 2025, daily ridership on Pune Metro’s two lines ranged between 144,000 and 160,000 rides.
June marked the first month the average daily rides crossed the 170,000 threshold, followed by a further rise in July to over 192,000.Breaking down the numbers, the Aqua Line (Vanaz-Ramwadi) carried the majority of passengers, with over 108,000 average daily rides in June. The Purple Line (PCMC-Swargate) accounted for 83,459 average daily rides during the same period.
Dr. Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director (Administration & Public Relations) at Maha Metro, attributed the growth to multiple factors. “The full 33 km network is now operational, and we are enhancing multimodal integration. Additionally, the monsoon season has led people to use two-wheelers less, opting for the metro instead. These combined factors likely contributed to the ridership increase,” he explained.Sonawane also announced plans to improve train frequency during peak hours, reducing intervals from seven minutes to six within the next three to four months.
This adjustment will pave the way for a future target of five-minute intervals.Despite this encouraging growth, Pune Metro’s current ridership remains well below projections. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) had estimated an average daily ridership of 600,000 passengers—over three times the current figures.
