Nagpur Traffic Department Cracks Down on Noise Pollution, Dismantles 440 Illegal Silencers

In a significant initiative aimed at reducing noise pollution and promoting responsible driving, the Nagpur City Traffic Department, led by Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal, Commissioner of Police Nagpur, and Archit Chandak, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), implemented a special campaign targeting modified silencers on two-wheelers. This campaign, which ran from January 5 to 9, focused on two-wheelers fitted with illegal aftermarket silencers that have been causing distress, particularly among senior citizens. “The campaign was initiated in response to a rise in complaints regarding the loud noise from these modifications, resulting in the seizure of 440 illegal silencers from local vehicles,” stated Dr. Singal. The confiscated silencers were destroyed using a road roller in a public event at Samvidhan Square, attended by police officials, school students, and community members on Thursday.
The police noted that violators were penalized under Sections 190(2) and 198 of the Motor Vehicles Act, with a total fine of ₹3,97,050 collected from offenders. Dr. Singal emphasized the importance of involving school students in the campaign to raise awareness about the consequences of illegal practices. Chandak added, “Modified silencers were replaced with original ones in the confiscated vehicles, and we will continue to take strict action against those using, manufacturing, or selling modified silencers.” Dr. Singal further highlighted that the initiative was not merely about penalizing offenders; it aimed to address the broader issues associated with unnecessary noise. “Excessive noise from modified silencers or unnecessary honking contributes to stress and anxiety.
By reducing noise pollution, we can create a more relaxed and safer driving environment,” he remarked. As part of the Maharashtra Police Foundation Week-2025 (Raising Day), the Zone-IV Police also destroyed 40 motorcycle silencers and 1,580 sealed country liquor bottles on Tuesday. This destruction took place under a road roller at the Dumping Yard, Wathoda, following 88 cases registered under the Prohibition Act within the Zone IV police station limits. A police official noted that this action is part of a broader effort to strengthen liquor law enforcement and ensure public safety. The initiative was conducted under the guidance of DCP Zone IV Rashmita Rao, along with ACP Ajni Vinayak Kote, Excise Inspector Raviraj Sonune, Sr Police Inspector Hudkeshwar Dhnyaneshwar Bhedodkar, Sr PI Ajni Nitinchandra Rajkumar, Sr PI Beltarodi Mukund Kawade, and others.
