Nagpur Cyber Police Crack Down on Online Hate Speech After Pahalgam Terror Attack

In the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which tragically claimed 26 lives and left several others injured—including a resident from Nagpur—the city police have stepped up their vigilance to curb the spread of hate speech and misinformation online. The Nagpur Cyber Police have launched a special monitoring initiative aimed at social media platforms where provocative content related to the Pahalgam attack has been circulating. As part of this effort, authorities have already arrested two youths from Madhya Pradesh and one from Jharkhand for posting inflammatory remarks about the attack, which targeted tourists in the Anantnag district.
Given the city’s historical encounters with communal unrest exacerbated by social media, the police have adopted a proactive approach. Under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Lohit Matani, dedicated cyber teams have been formed to track and respond to digital content that could incite tension among communities.“Special instructions have been issued to our cyber personnel to monitor and take action against posts that spread rumors, fake news, or communal hatred in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack,” stated DCP Matani. “We have enhanced our surveillance teams to ensure swift action against anyone attempting to disrupt peace through digital platforms.”DCP Matani also urged citizens to refrain from sharing objectionable content in WhatsApp groups or on social media.
“Even a single post can ignite unrest. We encourage people to exercise responsibility and remain vigilant,” he emphasized. With the increasing prevalence of online misinformation, the Nagpur Police are calling upon community members to actively support peacekeeping efforts by reporting any suspicious activity on social platforms. Their coordinated efforts aim to foster a safe and harmonious environment in the city during these challenging times.
