Former NCP Corporator Vanraj Andekar Fatally Shot in Pune

Former Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Vanraj Andekar was tragically shot dead in Pune on September 1. He sustained five gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. According to police reports, Vanraj was attacked by unidentified assailants who also used sharp weapons on him late Sunday night. He had previously been associated with the undivided NCP before the Pune municipal body came under state administration. The violent incident took place in the Nana Peth area of the city. “Five rounds were fired at Vanraj Andekar, and he was also assaulted with long-blade sickles. He was brought dead to KEM Hospital.
Initial reports indicate that Andekar suffered multiple injuries from sharp weapons. Further details will be provided as the investigation progresses,” stated Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma.Andekar’s body has been sent to Sassoon Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Elected as a corporator in the 2017 Pune Municipal Corporation elections, Vanraj Andekar came from a family with a notable political and criminal background; his mother, Rajashree Andekar, and uncle, Udaykanta Andekar, both served as corporators, while his sister, Vatsala Andekar, held the position of Mayor of Pune. The Andekar gang, led by Suryakant Andekar, has a notorious history, including involvement in murder, attempted murder, and extortion.
Although the gang had experienced a period of reduced influence, recent tensions and a failed assassination attempt on rival Atul Kudale have reignited violence in the area. The gang’s waning power and internal discontent have been cited as contributing factors to the resurgence of criminal activities.
