Citizens’ Forum Calls for Decongesting Pune Camp to Undri Stretch

Residents from various citizen forums in Wanowrie, Kondhwa, NIBM-Mohammadwadi, and Undri have raised their voices for the decongestion of seven major traffic choke points that are causing daily chaos along the route from Pune Camp to Undri. The identified locations include East Street Camp, Golibar Maidan, Fakhri Hills, Salunke Vihar Rd, NIBM Junction, Palace Orchard Undri, and Marvel Sangria Crossing. Many citizens have expressed frustration over the lack of traffic police presence at these hotspots, contributing to chronic traffic congestion. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has also faced criticism for its failure to address the issue of hawkers occupying roadways and for not ensuring pedestrian-friendly footpaths.Sunil Aiyer, director of the Mohammadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Forum (MURWDF), commented,
“With vehicular traffic surpassing the human population in the city, policymakers don’t seem to have a solution. The road stretch from Camp to Undri is severely affected by unruly traffic, insufficient traffic enforcement, and commuters flouting traffic laws. We urge the PMC commissioner to collaborate with the traffic branch to decongest these critical areas promptly.”Highlighting the dire conditions at NIBM Chowk, citizen Rafiz noted, “The Meetha Nagar Chowk is overrun by hawkers. The vicinity around Satyanand Hospital needs immediate clearance; in emergencies, it will be challenging for ambulances to access the area.”Jaymala Dhankikar, director of the NIBM Annexe Residents Forum, criticized the PMC’s road department for exacerbating the traffic issues.
She stated, “The PMC city engineers permitted builders to construct buildings without ensuring that the roads and footpaths were properly developed. For over three decades, the PMC has neglected its responsibilities regarding hawkers and parking arrangements, resulting in ongoing congestion.”Saleem Mulla, a member of the Kondhwa Citizens Forum, emphasized the urgency of decongesting Golibar Maidan and NIBM Chowk. He suggested, “We need a grade separator or flyover at Golibar Maidan and more traffic personnel to assist commuters in decongesting these chokepoints.”When approached for comment, DCP (Traffic) Amol Zende stated, “We will consider all feedback from citizen forums and the public to address congestion at these hotspots. Traffic division heads will meet with citizens to develop a joint action plan for effective decongestion.”
