Air Ambulance Service Planned for Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway in Early 2027

Maharashtra is preparing to introduce a dedicated air ambulance service along the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg by early 2027. The emergency medical initiative is designed to provide rapid air evacuation and critical trauma care to accident victims across major high-speed traffic corridors.
In addition to the Samruddhi Mahamarg, the proposed service will cover other key state routes, including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Goa Highway.
Saving Lives During the ‘Golden Hour’
The primary objective of the air ambulance network is to ensure critically injured motorists receive swift medical assistance during the crucial “golden hour”—the first hour following a traumatic injury when immediate medical intervention significantly increases survival rates.
For Nagpur, this initiative holds strategic importance:
- Long Corridor Coverage: The Samruddhi Mahamarg stretches across hundreds of kilometers, connecting Nagpur directly to Mumbai.
- Rapid Transport: Helivacs will bypass road traffic, cutting down transport times to specialized hospitals and trauma care hubs.
Implementation and Operational Readiness
The Maharashtra state government is currently finalizing standard operating procedures (SOPs), securing regulatory clearances, and preparing to float tenders for aviation service providers.
Key operational steps being undertaken include:
- Infrastructure Planning: Identifying designated helipads and partner trauma care centers along the highway stretches.
- Inter-Departmental Coordination: Synchronizing response teams, including traffic police, highway patrol, and emergency medical personnel.
- Vendor Selection: Partnering with specialized air ambulance operators.
Targeted for an early 2027 rollout, the long-term effectiveness of the service will rely on seamless coordination among emergency units, rapid flight dispatch protocols, and round-the-clock medical facility readiness.
