Nagpur’s Roads Set for a Smart Transformation

Nagpur’s roads are on the brink of becoming smarter—and stricter. The highly anticipated Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS), powered by artificial intelligence, is set to launch across the city. Following a successful trial run at ten busy junctions, including Law College Square, the system has demonstrated its effectiveness in enforcing traffic rules in real-time.
Once fully operational, IITMS will monitor 171 junctions throughout Nagpur. Equipped with high-definition cameras and sensors, the system can detect violations such as helmetless riding, red-light running, overspeeding, lane-cutting, and even wrong-side driving within seconds. These infractions are automatically cross-verified with vehicle information from the State Transport Department’s database, significantly reducing the need for manual policing.
In a striking test, NMC engineers deliberately drove a vehicle on the wrong side at a sensor-enabled junction, and the system flagged it in real-time, confirming its readiness.
Beyond enforcing traffic rules, IITMS introduces adaptive signal control, which reduces wait times by adjusting green signals based on traffic density. Additionally, its vehicle and facial recognition capabilities could quickly identify culprits in hit-and-run cases, aiding police investigations.
An official noted, “While penalizing lane-cutting may initially increase violations, it will ultimately lead to safer roads.”
To enhance public awareness, digital speed boards will be installed, starting with the accident-prone Rameshwari–Omkar Nagar stretch.
The extensive rollout, which includes smart poles, cameras, motion detectors, and fiber optics, will occur in phases. Jointly managed by the NMC’s Command and Control Center and the Traffic Police, this initiative marks Nagpur’s boldest step toward disciplined, AI-driven traffic governance.
And yes—this system may finally hold unruly auto drivers accountable at Rani Jhansi and Variety Square.
