Pune’s Baba Bhide Bridge Closed for 1.5 Months — And This Time, Rain Isn’t the Reason

In an unexpected turn of events for the residents of Pune, the iconic Baba Bhide Bridge, typically closed during the monsoon due to water releases from the Khadakwasla Dam, is now shut down for an entirely different reason—Metro construction. We will check the key reasons why the said bridge will be closed for the said duration of time. Let’s check the same as under:

Not Water, But Work

Starting today, the Bhide Bridge will be closed for the next one and a half months to facilitate critical work on a pedestrian bridge that will connect to the metro station. This decision was made jointly by Metro authorities and the Pune traffic police, as the ongoing development work necessitates a complete closure for safety and progress, according to a report by FPJ.

A Daily Lifeline for Thousands

The bridge is a crucial link for thousands of commuters traveling between Deccan and central Pune, including routes from Sinhagad Road, Kothrud, Shivajinagar, and Nagar Road. With the closure now in effect, residents can expect traffic diversions and longer commutes in the coming weeks.

A Bridge With History

Affectionately known as the Baba Bhide Bridge, it spans the Mutha River, connecting Deccan with Narayan Peth. Constructed in 1996, the bridge is named after Babarao Bhide, a revered lawyer and social reformer. It holds significant importance in the city’s infrastructure, not only for its utility but also for its frequent closures during the monsoon season when water is released from the Khadakwasla Dam.This time, however, it is not nature but urban development that is prompting Punekars to take a detour. Authorities are expected to release detailed traffic advisories in the coming days. In the meantime, citizens are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly.
